
This event at Columbia University’s Teachers College brings together major leaders from within the world of English Education. The event, hosted by the Racial Literacy Project @ TC and broadcasting live from the Smith Learning Theater, will focus on racial literacy and liberated language.

Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning Professor of English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education, Black girl literacies, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race, culturally responsive pedagogy, and diversity, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s “2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright”, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her co-authored book [with Dr. Detra Price-Dennis] Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Toward Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces will be published in April 2021. Read more.

Dr. Limarys Caraballo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arts and Humanities at Teachers College where she teaches doctoral and masters courses and seminars in the English education. She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, and serves as a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education. She is a member of the Doctoral Faculty Consortium at the CUNY Graduate Center and founding co-director of Cyphers for Justice, a youth and educator development program grounded in the principles of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) and multiple culturally sustaining literacies.
